The 2019 case contained allegations, not a verdict
A federal grand jury indictment charged Jeffrey Epstein with sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy. The government alleged a recruitment and payment scheme involving dozens of underage girls in New York and Florida. [4] [5]
The Justice Department’s own announcement states the required limitation: the charges were accusations, and the defendant was presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. [4] Epstein died before trial. The criminal case therefore did not produce a verdict on those counts. [11]
A separate prosecution produced a conviction
Ghislaine Maxwell was charged in a separate federal case. On December 29, 2021, a jury returned guilty verdicts on multiple counts connected to facilitating and participating in the sexual abuse of minors. [6] The official case page preserves charging documents, case updates, and victim contact information. [7]
A conviction is an adjudicated result. It should not be blurred into every allegation appearing elsewhere in civil discovery, contact records, or witness testimony.
The archive carries status labels
This project labels a proposition as alleged when it comes from a complaint or indictment, testified when it comes from sworn testimony, documented when a record establishes an event, and adjudicated when a court or jury has resolved it. A person’s presence in a document is not itself a legal status.
Where a source does not establish a proposition, the correct archive entry is not a theory. It is insufficient record.
