The Good People Did Nothing

The Pattern

Nearly 90 million eligible Americans did not vote in the 2024 presidential election. That number is larger than the number of people who voted for either █████ or Kamala Harris. The Guardian reported it. Pew Research confirmed it. The Census Bureau documented the reasons: 20% said they weren’t interested. 18% said they were too busy. 15% didn’t like the candidates.

Disinterest. Busyness. Dislike. These are not political positions. They are the conditions under which a system gets captured.

While 90 million people stayed home, three things happened. A lobbying organization spent $100 million removing critics of Israel from Congress. A casino billionaire’s widow spent $100 million electing a president who would shape U.S. foreign policy to Israel’s specifications. And that president met with Vladimir Putin in Alaska and agreed that Ukraine should surrender territory to Russia.

The quote everyone attributes to Edmund Burke — “the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing” — was never said by Burke. Reuters and Quote Investigator both traced the misattribution. The sentiment, however, is accurate regardless of who said it. The mechanism is simple: when the people who would stop something don’t show up, the people who want to do it get the room to themselves.

They got the room.

The purge

In the 2024 election cycle, AIPAC — the American Israel Public Affairs Committee — spent more than $100 million. Common Dreams reported the figure. The money went to Democratic primary races, targeting incumbents who had called for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri lost her primary after AIPAC’s super PAC spent at least $8.6 million against her. The Washington Post reported the spending. Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York lost his primary after AIPAC spent nearly $10 million on his opponent. ABC News 538 documented both races. Both were members of the Squad. Both had called for a ceasefire. Both were replaced by candidates who would not condition U.S. military aid to Israel.

In 2026, AIPAC escalated. Al Jazeera reported that the group began routing money through shell PACs — layering funds from one PAC to another to conceal its involvement. NBC News confirmed that AIPAC’s super PAC seeded two anonymous groups that spent more than $14 million in Illinois House primaries alone. The three super PACs accounted for 60% of all outside spending in those races.

Sludge reported that AIPAC made $12.7 million in direct PAC contributions to members of Congress in the first half of 2025 alone — an 80% increase over the same period in the previous cycle. The top recipient was House Speaker Mike Johnson, at $625,000. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries received $250,000.

The pattern is institutional capture through campaign finance. The money removes the people who would vote against unconditional military aid. It replaces them with people who won’t. The remaining members watch what happened to Bush and Bowman and calculate accordingly. The purge doesn’t need to target everyone. It needs to target enough people that the rest understand the cost of dissent.

The purchase

Miriam Adelson is an Israeli-American billionaire. She is the widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. She is worth an estimated $35 billion. In 2024, she gave $100 million to a super PAC supporting █████‘s presidential campaign. The Times of Israel and The New York Times both reported the donation.

The Adelsons had been here before. During █████‘s first term, they pushed him to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and endorse Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights. Newsweek reported that █████ publicly credited the couple with shaping these decisions. Al-Monitor reported that █████ namechecked Adelson at the Knesset in October 2025, saying: “Miriam and Sheldon would come into the Office. They’d call me. I think they had more trips to the White House than anybody else.”

█████ added: “I actually asked her once, ‘So Miriam: I know you love Israel. What do you love more, the United States or Israel?’ She refused to answer.”

A foreign government’s policy preferences, purchased through a $100 million campaign contribution, implemented by a president who publicly credits the donor. This is not a conspiracy theory. It is a transaction, documented in real time, confirmed by the participants themselves.

the territory

On August 15, 2025, █████ met with Vladimir Putin at a U.S. military base near Anchorage, Alaska. The Los Angeles Times reported that █████ emerged from the meeting endorsing Russia’s territorial ambitions. He told European counterparts he had agreed with Putin’s demand that Ukraine make territorial concessions.

The Kyiv Independent reported that Putin asked █████ to recognize Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson oblasts as Russian, along with Crimea. █████ emerged believing a deal could be reached if Kyiv gave up the entire Donbas region.

The BBC reported that the two leaders emerged with no ceasefire, only a joint statement. Putin said they needed to “eliminate the root causes of the conflict” — his standard framing for Ukraine’s submission.

Before the Alaska summit, the █████ administration had already suspended military aid to Ukraine and paused intelligence sharing. Politico and Reuters both reported the cutoff in March 2025. The suspension was designed to pressure Kyiv into accepting territorial concessions.

The New York Times reported that the █████ administration issued no new sanctions against Russia in all of 2025. Existing sanctions lost force without maintenance. New dummy companies funneled funds and critical components to Moscow — computer chips, military equipment — that would otherwise have been cut off.

The Council on Foreign Relations and the BBC both reported that the administration eased sanctions on Russian oil, issuing waivers through the Treasury Department. The Atlantic Council estimated Russia was earning an additional $150 million per day in budget revenue from the relief.

The pattern is reality preemption. The territory is conceded before the negotiation concludes. The sanctions are dropped before the war ends. The intelligence is cut off before the ally can object. Each action creates a fact on the ground that cannot be reversed by argument.

The money that flowed to Israel

Since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, the United States has provided at least $21.7 billion in military aid to Israel. Military.com and the Quincy Institute both reported the figure. The Council on Foreign Relations documented that the U.S. has provided $174 billion in cumulative bilateral assistance to Israel since World War II — more than any other country.

The current 10-year Memorandum of Understanding, signed in 2016, provides $38 billion through 2028. Axios reported that Israel is now seeking a 20-year framework with “America First” provisions. The annual $3.8 billion baseline was supplemented by emergency appropriations: $3.5 billion in Foreign Military Financing and $5.2 billion for missile defense in a single April 2024 supplemental bill.

In July 2026, CNN reported that 103 House Democrats voted to block military aid to Israel — a measure that failed 104-314. The vote showed a growing split in the Democratic Party. But the split is academic. The aid flows regardless. The votes to block it fail. The members who would have voted differently were already purged in the primaries.

The pardons

On January 20, 2025, his first day back in office, █████ issued sweeping pardons to January 6 rioters. NPR reported that the pardons covered hundreds of defendants, including people convicted of violent assaults on police officers. Reuters later reported that the DOJ prosecutors who handled those cases were themselves being investigated by the new administration’s “Weaponization Working Group.”

The pardons sent a signal: political violence in service of the right people will be forgiven. The prosecution of that violence will be punished. The signal was received.

The democracy metrics

The V-Dem Institute at the University of Gothenburg, one of the world’s leading democracy-measurement organizations, reported in 2025 that the United States is undergoing “the fastest evolving episode of autocratization the USA has been through in modern history.” The Carnegie Endowment published a comparative analysis confirming the finding. The Century Foundation released its own report titled “America Took an Authoritarian Turn in 2025.”

These are not partisan talking points. They are measurements from political science research centers using standardized indicators across 200 countries. The United States is backsliding faster than any established democracy in the dataset.

The stock trading that didn’t stop

NPR reported in November 2025 that a bipartisan group in the House was trying to ban lawmakers from trading individual stocks. The effort is widely expected to fail. Business Insider reported that the discharge petition had 16 signatures as of December 2025 — well short of the 218 needed to force a vote.

The STOCK Act of 2012 requires disclosure of trades over $1,000 within 30 days. The fine for failing to report is $200. According to a 2024 report cited by NPR, 46 members of Congress outperformed the S&P 500. The system is not broken. It is working as designed — for the people inside it.

The pattern

The pattern is institutional capture through inaction. It does not require a conspiracy. It requires a vacuum.

90 million people created the vacuum by not voting. AIPAC filled it by spending $100 million to purge critics of Israel from Congress. Miriam Adelson filled it by spending $100 million to elect a president who would implement Israel’s policy preferences. █████ filled it by meeting with Putin and agreeing that Ukraine should surrender its territory. The defense industry filled it through a revolving door that moves 672 former government officials into lobbying jobs for the top 20 defense companies. Congress filled it by declining to ban its own members from trading stocks on inside information.

None of this required a secret meeting. None of it required a shadowy cabal. It required 90 million people to decide they weren’t interested, or they were too busy, or they didn’t like the candidates.

The opportunists did not create the apathy. They exploited it. The apathy was the precondition. The exploitation was the pattern.

What the apathy cost

The costs are specific:

• Two members of Congress who called for a ceasefire in Gaza were removed by $100 million in primary spending. Their replacements will not condition aid to Israel.
• $21.7 billion in U.S. military aid flowed to Israel during the Gaza war. The flow continues. The votes to stop it fail.
• A president who publicly credits a foreign government’s donor with shaping his Middle East policy sits in the Oval Office. The donor sat in the front row when he moved the embassy to Jerusalem. She refuses to say whether she loves the United States or Israel more.
• Ukraine was pressured to surrender territory to Russia. U.S. intelligence sharing was cut off. Sanctions on Russian oil were eased. Russia earns an additional $150 million per day.
• January 6 rioters — including people convicted of violent assaults on police — were pardoned. The prosecutors who charged them are being investigated.
• The United States is measured by political scientists as undergoing the fastest democratic decline in its modern history.
• Congress continues to trade stocks on inside information. The ban will probably fail.

Every one of these outcomes was enabled by the same precondition: the people who would have stopped them did not show up.

What we know, and what we do not

We know that 90 million eligible Americans did not vote in 2024. We know AIPAC spent $100 million purging critics of Israel from Congress. We know Miriam Adelson spent $100 million electing █████. We know █████ met with Putin and agreed Ukraine should concede territory. We know $21.7 billion in military aid flowed to Israel. We know the January 6 rioters were pardoned. We know V-Dem measured the United States as undergoing unprecedented democratic decline.

We do not know whether the 90 million would have changed the outcome if they had voted. We do not know whether a different Congress would have conditioned aid to Israel. We do not know whether a different president would have maintained sanctions on Russia. We do not know whether the democratic decline is reversible.

What we know is enough. The vacuum was real. The opportunists were real. The costs are real. The pattern is the relationship between the three.

The quote was misattributed. The mechanism was not. When good people do nothing, opportunists take the room. They redistribute the power. They redirect the money. They rewrite the policy. They pardon the violence. They call it democracy because the forms were followed. The forms were followed because the people who would have broken them stayed home.

The good people did nothing. This is what nothing costs.
